artist statement

My work is rooted in color, movement, and the way a place or moment can be felt beyond its literal form. I move between expressive coastal abstractions, florals, and narrative subjects, often allowing structure and spontaneity to develop together through layered paint and shifting composition.

In newer series such as Space Between Forms, I reduce the landscape to simple shapes and color relationships, exploring how visual restraint can create calm while still holding depth, energy, and atmosphere.

Jodi Gaines is a contemporary painter based in South Florida, working in acrylic, oil, and mixed media across both expressive and concept-driven series. Her work moves between abstract coastal compositions, florals, figurative subjects, and narrative moments, connected by a strong focus on color, emotion, and the relationship between structure and gesture.

Raised in the Florida Keys, Gaines draws ongoing inspiration from the coast, from shifting light, and from the way memory shapes how a place is felt rather than simply seen. Her newer series, including Space Between Forms, explore how simple shapes and layered color can create a sense of calm while still holding depth, movement, and painterly energy.

Influenced by the visual language of Jane Davis Doggett, the atmospheric color relationships of Mark Rothko, and the expressive surface energy of Vincent van Gogh, Gaines approaches painting as both an intuitive and deliberate process. Abstraction and representation often develop together, allowing one to inform the other.

Before returning fully to painting, Gaines built a career in digital design, product development, and entrepreneurship, co-founding multiple software companies. That background continues to influence her sense of composition, balance, and visual communication.

Her work invites viewers to slow down and engage with what is present, while also leaving space for personal interpretation.
